11:00-18:00 (Open daily during the exhibition)
Atsuhiko Suematsu Gallery will be holding a special exhibition, "Painting 60⇨90." The exhibition will be divided into two parts, with the first half being held at a participating gallery in TENNOZ ART WEEK and the second half being held at the gallery itself.
The first part of the exhibition will feature Yamamura Kuniaki's (1942-) signature work, "Work 1978," alongside contemporary works by Motonaga Sadamasa and Domoto Hisao. Yamamura began his career at Nagoya's Sakura Gallery in 1966, studying oil painting under Yamaguchi Takeo and Aso Saburo at Musashino Art University. He also frequently visited galleries showcasing contemporary art from Japan and abroad, such as Minami Gallery and Tokyo Gallery, where he gained exposure to Western contemporary art. Since around 1970, Yamamura has continued to paint unique, key-shaped forms every day using a face brush. "Work 1978," a masterpiece that took over a year to complete, is a valuable example that offers a glimpse into new trends in painting.
The second part of the exhibition, which will be held in the gallery after a short interval, will trace the changes in expression that have continued since Yamaguchi Kaoru (1907-1968).
Born in Gunma in 1907, Yamaguchi Kaoru lived in France from 1930 to around 1933. After returning to Japan, he produced paintings with a distinctively Japanese palette and poetic sentiment, exhibiting his work at the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1957 and the Venice Biennale in 1960, making him one of the pioneering artists of contemporary Japanese art.
This exhibition will focus on Yamaguchi's work "Night Flight," painted in 1967, towards the end of his life, and will also feature works from the 1980s by Hitsuda Nobuya (1941-), Nara Yoshitomo (1959-), and Ogawa Shinji (1959-).
