March 14, 18:00–20:00 Working beyond the conventional framework of poetry, Gozo Yoshimasu has developed a multidisciplinary practice encompassing photography, objects, and video. Among these, his use of multiple-exposure techniques with analog film cameras has occupied a significant position in his recent work.
The works presented in this exhibition are based on multiple-exposure prints included in Omote-gami (2008, Shichōsha). On October 8, 2017, during his exhibition at shumoku gallery in Nagoya, handwritten words were added directly onto these prints. The inscriptions were executed in an improvised and concentrated manner.
Multiple-exposure photography overlays several landscapes within a single image, bringing together scenes from different times and distances into one visual field. Yoshimasu has developed this method using film cameras. In these works, text is added in response to the layered imagery, forming a relationship between visual and linguistic elements within a single plane through the artist’s memory and thought.
